The utterances of, “powers of Superman” and “just say the word”, sent ripples across the internet that echoed “Shazam” in the ears of comic book fans and film buffs, alike when Dwayne Johnson, during an interview about his latest film, “Hercules”, dropped a few hints about the character he will be portraying in an upcoming DC Comics film. Given the nature of this blog, it would be more than a little bit uncharacteristic to let this tidbit pass by without incident. To that end, I thought I would dazzle you with a theory about the decision to cast The Rock and all that I hope it entails.
It’s clear that Johnson’s character in the “Shazam” film slated for a release in 2016 will be one that was well though out and carefully planned. It’s also clear from the interview that the role seems very well suited to Johnson who, in addition to admitting that he has been longing to play Green Lantern, John Stewart, has also said that Black Adam is one of his favourite characters within the DC pantheon.
Personally, I think it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Johnson could have been given the role of, not one, but two characters in the film as his description lends itself very easily to, both, Shazam and his arch nemesis, Black Adam. If that is the case, then it would seem to be a match made in heaven considering Johnson’s previous experience in the WWE. It is a well known fact that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has ample experience from his wrestling days both as a heel and a face.
(For the people like me, out there, who either, don’t know about professional wrestling or think it’s stupid or both; the heel plays the bad guy while the face plays the good guy. All while they pummel each other to pieces, I’m assuming)
It goes without saying that this is purely speculation and should be taken with a decent helping of salt. It is simply a possibility that I think could prove highly rewarding for fans of DC, Warner Bros. and of Johnson, himself. And even if it’s not to be, here’s hoping that DC fans will be excited and elated to see the characters they love stepping up to challenge Marvel’s domination of the superhero blockbuster with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and now, Dwayne Johnson, leading the charge.
